What to Look for When Choosing an Eco-friendly Toilet Paper

by Tami Boyd, SupplyTime Product Expert

How do you know if your toilet paper is eco-friendly?

One of the easiest things that you can do as an environmentally responsible consumer is to buy products that are eco-friendly. Choosing something as simple as a roll of toilet paper may not seem as though it has an impact on the environment but you may be surprised. According to recycled toilet paper manufacturer Seventh Generation, “If every household in the U.S. replaced just one 4-pack of 300 sheet virgin fiber bathroom tissue with 100% recycled product we could save 630,000 trees, and save 1.6 million cubic feet of landfill space.” Fortunately manufacturers are proud of their environmental and sustainability efforts so they seek independent certification as proof. These third party organizations allow manufacturers to gain certification by evaluating the product through a series of extensive testing and audits. The ecolabels are prominently displayed right on the product package.

Ecolabels to Look for on Toilet Paper Packaging

  • EcoLogo Certified – products, services and packaging that are certified for reduced environmental impact
  • FSC Certified – certified by the Forest Stewardship Council ensures that products are made from responsibly managed forests
  • USEPA CPG – Comprehensive Procurement Guidelines is part of EPA’s continuing effort to promote the use of recycled content products authorized by RCRA
  • Chlorine Free Product Association – promoting manufacturing processes that are free of chlorine chemistry
